Cuba won in straight sets over Dominican Republic
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, June 5, 2007.-
Cuba advanced to the semi final round of the Men’s Pan American
Cup with a straight set victory (25-23, 25-22, 25-20) over host
Dominican Republic.
The Cubans, who finished with a perfect record of 3-0 in Pool B,
outscored their rivals in blockings 12-3.
Yadier Sanchez was the best scorer of the match with 19 points for
Cuba and Osmany Camejo added 9, including six blocks. Dominicans
Elvis Contreras and Jose Caceres had 16 and 13 respectively.
“We studied the Dominicans very well and could win the key
points,” said Juan Gala, the Cuban coach. “Here we have a young
team but with a lot of desire.”
“My team lacks the experience of the international competition and
it showed today,” said Juan Carlos Perdomo, the Dominican coach.
“We committed the mistakes that go with that.”
The Dominicans now will face Canada in the quarterfinals phase and
Mexico will meet Panama.
